Rejoicing in students' progress
[Students' progress] Hi Teachers,
Do you ever get surprised at how much your learners evolve?
I have had an interesting incident today after I had asked one of my learners to create her dream city, which she called Curly Town. I thought, "ok, a place where we both belong."
But she surpassed expectations. In her words:
"Curly Town a place where you can have curls and coils and straighten your hair as well. The first people of curly town were African, but now we have a bit of everything and we love Brazil, especially cariocas. Curly town is proof that the people in the world can coexist and people can work together to transform the world"
This is when you realise your student is not only surrounded by love and care, but by people who genuinely want them to grow up to be decent adults and to love themselves and what makes them who they are.
I don't know how she has progressed so much and so quickly with her English (maybe I have too many adults in my teaching life), but she is super confident and has outsmarted me and written a text which is half in her native language, but I simply can't complain. She's fitting it all in perfectly, like a very intelligent, curious person would. And this goes to show students don't have little drawers in their brains where they keep languages separately. It's all mixed up together and the best learning process takes place when that big abyss has a little bridge and a warm helping hand who keeps telling you you won't fall.
Ps: Is it normal that they progress so quickly at 10?
Here's your bit of joy; we will have a travel brochure soon!
