Reading is of the hardest skills to teach interactively. One of my students has recently hired me for an extra hour a week so we could work on this skill. We started off with me trying to get him to read to himself and explain it back to me, but he constantly seemed to want to read aloud. What I noticed is he'd often not reflect on the text a lot and would simply sound out words in a meaningless way. That's when I had the idea of using the annotation features (well, basically, the squares) of Zoom to make the whole thing more challenging and get him to actually delve into the text for meaning.
I am very pleased with the results as this seems to be awarding us a wonderful opportunity to teach language with real-life content!
I have selected a quick 13-minute snippet where we discuss verb tenses, vocabulary, reading strategies, grammar and, of course, current news!
